How to Manage Your Facebook Account Privacy
In Facebook account to keep your info private is going harder and harder everytime because facebook tries to make it public. So I am giving you some tips to keep your account in your control. Whenever facebook introduce new feature then it changes your privacy settings to defaults and make it public. Actually it happens when Facebook adds new feature it automatically enable our privacy settings and make it public. Many people might have thinking that while facebook adds new feature it should ask whether we want to enable it or not instead of simply enabling it and share the information which you don’t want to share. Since facebook is adding new features all the time and instead of souring your facebook settings daily I will help you to twist your privacy settings to keep information safe.
Lets start with the basic privacy settings – What is there on your timeline
Timeline is the place where all facebook activity shows : Like new status updates, new photos uploaded or tagged in, posts other people have tagged you in, game requests, game results almost everything. So you can control every aspect of your timeline’s privacy through Facebook’s privacy settings and you can also make sure that nothing is shown on your timeline without your permission.
You can see the basic settings by clicking the privacy icons in top right hand corner which looks like security device or bolt in any facebook page clicking on which will show options advertise, privacy settings, account settings. You can find shortcut also for privacy settings adjacent to it
Privacy Settings: Who Can See Your Stuff and Look You Up
The third section you click in the sidebar which is privacy will show you Privacy Settings and Tools as shown in below figure and it shows who can see your posts and look you up on Facebook.
The settings include:
- Who can see my stuff
- Who can see your future posts
- Review all your posts and things you’re tagged in
- Limit the audience for past posts
- Who can look me up
- Who can look you up using your email
- Who can look up your timeline by name
- Do you want search engines to link to your timeline?
Who can see your future posts : This shows and changes that by default who can see your status updates. You can set it to Public, Friends, Friends of friends or something custom like specific people or list of friends you provided and you can add the people with whom you don’t want to share posts.
Review all your posts and things you’re tagged in : This takes you to the Activity Log, where you’ll see each and every small update that goes to Facebook on your profile.that could be game you played on facebook, a new photo you uploaded, or a new status your friend tagged you in. From the Activity Log, just by enabling it you can have the Timeline Review controls whether you have to manually approve posts you’re tagged in before they go on your timeline. When you have a post to review, just click Timeline Review on the left hand side of your Activity Log. you can twist who can see each individual update, as well as whether it shows up on your main timeline.
Limit the audience for past posts: From the past if you have any post those were set to be viewable by friends of friends or public, then you can use this option and limit all your past posts to friends only. But if you want to change your audience for some of the posts then you have the option to individually change audience of your posts. all you have to do is just go to individual post and choose a different audience. This is a very good way to maintain privacy to your post if by mistake any of them marked public.
Who can look you up using your email: This itself explains the option. I usually prefer to set this to “Everyone” since the only people who know my email are official people.i would want to be friends with.
Who can look up your timeline by name: If you want people to be able to find your profile just by searching your name, set this accordingly. Otherwise, you can lock it down by changing this to just Friends.
Do you want search engines to link to your timeline: If you turn this on your facebook profile will indexed in google and If you don’t want so just turn this off.
Timeline and Tagging Settings
The other one of the main section of Facebook’s privacy settings is Timeline and Tagging as shown in below picture which deals with other people post on their timeline and tag you in pictures, status updates, check-ins etc. so next is the settings you will want to twist.
- Who can add things to my timeline?
Who can post on your timeline: This option shows that who can post on your timeline and there is only two options Friends or Only me.
Review Posts friends tag you in: This option gives you notification whenever your friend tags you in his post.if you set this setting on then it will not show on your timeline until and unless you review it and click or mark it as ok. So setting it on is the best way to keep you reserved.
- Who can see things on my timeline?
Review what other people see on your timeline: To make sure that you don’t have any private information showing to those whom you don’t want to show.If you are not sure how your profile looks to friends of your friends or friends or to the public, you can use this feature to view it.
Who can see posts you’ve been tagged in: If someone tags you in a post and you’ve allowed it on your timeline, this denotes who can see it: Everyone, Friends of Friends, just Friends, close friends or a custom setting.
Who can see what others post on your timeline: When others “write on your wall,” this setting denotes who can see those posts and here also the same options you have to chose like Everyone, Friends of Friends, just Friends, close friends or a custom setting.
- How can I manage tags people add and tagging suggestions?
Review tags add to your own posts before the tags appear on Facebook: This is similar to the Profile Review mentioned above, but it works for tags other people put on your posts. if you post a status or picture or photo and someone wants to tag themselves in it, so if you turn this on will show you the review those tags before they show.Better to turn this On.
When you’re tagged in a post, who do you want to add to the audience: Suppose one of your friend tag you in his post or photo and some of your friends are not in his friend list then this feature allows you to add your friends as audience for that post.
Manage Blocking
Blocking will help you a lot in facebook to keep your account fine. If you want any of your friend or people which you don’t want to see your posts or you don’t want them to like your posts and comment on your activity so you can Block them by this feature.
Restricted list : If you add friends or people to this restricted list they will not able to comment or like your posts which you make public they can only see the information and posts which you make public. Other good thing is that facebook doest not notify people or your friends when you add them into restricted list.
Block users : If you don’t want to be your friend anymore you can block that friend and then that friend will not be your friend and he will not be able to interact with you except the applications and games which you are using and a group you both are member of. You can add it by adding his/her name or mailed.
Block applications and event invites : For this feature you will have this options(applications and events) seperatly in your facebook account’s privacy settings. Once you block the application or events invites from particular friend. Your future request for apps and events sent by the friend will automatically get ignored. All you have to put his/her name or mail id in the given box.
This was a simple settings that needed to secure your Facebook account. I would appreciate your comments and few more tips that we might missed to mention here.
